Why Did I Read This?
It’s a natural progression to want to find your why, after reading Simon Sinek’s Start With Why. Simon Sinek’s WHY is “To inspire people to do what inspires them.” So what’s mine? What inspires me? What is it that would make me wake up every morning with a clear sense of why every day matters?
I have no clue. Why do I even do what I’m doing? Yeah I wake up everyday and I get excited about some things but I dread some. I feel fulfilled after I do certain things, but I get frustrated when I have to do certain things that I don’t enjoy doing. I know I’m on the right track in my life, but… having a WHY statement?
My own WHY statement that articulates my purpose in this life, what I believe in, and even how I’m going to live my WHY and what is the proof our my WHY.
What’s The Book About?
“Start With Why has led millions of readers to rethink everything they do – in their personal lives, their careers and their organizations.
Now Find Your Why picks up where Start With Why left off. It shows you how to apply Simon Sinek’s powerful insights so that you can find more inspiration at work — and in turn inspire those around you.”
My 3 Biggest Takeaways
Biggest Takeaway #1
Finding your WHY is a journey, a process, which means that even after you finish reading the book from cover to cover, you won’t find your why, you won’t get your WHY statement unless you actually do what you’re asked to do in the book. Find Your Why is more than just a book, it’s a workbook. It’s like a manual that guides you step by step through the entire process, in detail, with clear and specific instructions. And I’m actually in the process of finding my WHY with a partner right now.
Biggest Takeaway #2
More than just your personal WHY, there’s also the tribe’s WHY and also nested WHYs. Sure, most of the time, an organization’s WHY starts from the founder’s WHY, but they may not be exactly the same. And so, in an organization, there are also teams with different functions, different goals and hence different beliefs too. “A Nested WHY always serves the company’s overarching WHY; it never competes with it.” The book also presents case studies of why certain organizations thrive while others falter.
Biggest Takeaway #3
Find Your Why is not just a help me thing, it’s a help others effort. You actually need a partner to help you find your why. And if you’re curious and genuinely interested to help others find their find, you can become a partner to someone who’s finding their personal why, or a facilitator to find a group find their shared why.
Should You Read This?
Yes if you want to wake up every morning with a clear sense of why every day matters and live a fulfilled and successful life.
“Your vision is only actionable if you say it out loud. If you keep it to yourself, it will remain a figment of your imagination.”
What really compelled me and convinced me to stay on track and persist until I find my WHY is this, “If we want to feel an undying passion for our work, if we want to feel we are contributing to something bigger than ourselves, we all need to know our WHY.”
This book is not just for reading, it’s for navigating, for application. Finding your WHY will take time and I believe it will be worth it. Worth the time, worth the price of a book (that’s crazy!). For crying out loud, we’re talking about finding your life purpose and what inspires you to do what you do! To live a fulfilled life is something that money can’t buy, but money is just a result of it.
“WHY goes much deeper to understanding what motivates and inspires us. It is the purpose, cause or belief that drives every organization and every person’s individual career. Why does your company exist? Why did you get out of bed this morning? And why should anyone care?”
Stop wondering if you’re in the right job, or if the company’s a right fit for you, or what are you supposed to do with your life.
Invest the time and effort, make a commitment to yourself to find your WHY with a trusted partner. Because that’s what I’m doing now and I’m excited and looking forward to waking up every single day knowing why what I do matters and why I’m even doing what I’m doing!
The best thing? I can stop trying to figure things out because I know what I want, need and choose to do with my life.
Find your WHY, start now.
