2019: 365 days, 52 weeks. Simply put, it’s time to challenge myself to be the writer I am meant to be by starting with the #52weeks52books 2019 challenge!
9 days left to the end of 2018, 9 days left to the start of this challenge.
While my competitive streak is shrieking silently in my head, “Yeah! Bring it on!”, my insecurities and fear that has stopped me from writing for so many years are whispering to me how impossible this is given that my schedule next year is so packed. I’m going to be away for work so often that no way can I hold up to my end of the stick.
But heck it, I’m going to do it anyway.
The Rationale Behind #52weeks52books

I’ve always wanted to be a writer.
But wanting to be and actually writing are obviously 2 different realities. And for a long long time I was stuck in the reality of wanting to write but held back by a ton of excuses and reasons like what if no one reads what I write? What if my writing is crap? But I really don’t have the time to write amidst my busy schedule, yada yada.
Turning 34 in 2019, that “want to be a writer” voice is telling me to choose.
I can either be a real writer or a wanna-be. But I can’t be both.
The final push was when someone dear to me seized my attention with how a regular guy in China became a best-selling author within 2 years.
With his love for reading, he persisted with reading one book a week and wrote book reviews consistently on one of China’s largest content (text) sharing platform. Why did he do it? He loved reading and he had a dream where more people would fall in love with reading, and he thrives to help more people read.
So in 2 years, he published 3 best-sellers.
Why #52weeks52books
On the surface, it seems like what he did inspired me to start this challenge.
The usual “if he can do it, so can I” looks like a logical explanation.
But really, what inspired me is that I share a similar dream.
A Big Dream
I have a dream. A dream where everyone (re)discovers and become better versions of themselves through a love for reading and writing.
Before you can ever fall in love with anything, you’ve got to start somewhere. And so this is where I start working towards that dream. To encourage and inspire everyone to read and write.
Through reading and writing, may we not only discover the hidden potential of all things but use it to rewrite our past, create our future, and live our dreams.
To embrace and celebrate endless possibilities and create new realities.
So for you who have always wanted to write but for whatever reason you haven’t started, time to be the writer you’re meant to be.

2019 Challenge: #52weeks52books
So that’s why #52weeks52books to get me reading and writing and work towards being the writer I’m meant to be, always wanted to be.
Instead of feeling daunted that I have to immediately write a best-selling novel, recommending books feels more “doable.”
Most importantly, it gets me back into the habit of reading and creates the opportunity to brush up on my writing.
I write not because I want to anymore, but because I have to.
Whether or not anyone is reading.
